Previous Sermons

Below is a list of older sermons; just click on the book you want and the individual sermons will drop down.   Our goal is to preach as many genres of Scripture as we can each calendar year. To best accomplish this we have developed the preaching schedule below. For that reason, we often find ourselves working through several books at a time – so not all the following books will be complete studies.

Our Preaching Schedule…
New Testament History (Gospels & Acts) – Winter
New Testament Letters - Spring
Old Testament Poetry, Wisdom, or Prophecy – Summer
Old Testament History – Fall

Topical Studies: Every now and then it is important for us to step back and get a bigger picture of some of the teaching contained within God's Word. One good way to do that is to take a topic and see what the Bible teaches about it.

The Book of Genesis: In this book, God creates his world and his people. Genesis also introduces us to the human problem (sin) and the remedy (God's seed). The imagery of creation is repeated over and over. God's chosen seed endures his people's sin and unbelief. But God makes his promises and they will not be thwarted.

Exodus – An Introduction

The Book of Numbers is the story of Israel's trip through the wilderness. What should have taken a short amount of time ended up taking forty years and costing the lives of almost the entire people of God. This is one of the most practical books we have ever studied because we, like Israel, are faced with wilderness. The temptations that they encountered are the same we face on a daily basis. And the same God that they discovered is the same God who reveals himself to us. We studied this book in the Fall of 2014.

The Book of Job is not as much about suffering as it is about the emotional fallout that accompanies suffering. This sermon series was preached in direct response to the tornado that destroyed much of our community in May of 2011. Job is neither an easy nor especially comforting book, even for those who have suffered, but its teaching is invaluable as we try to face some of life's hardest circumstances.

The Book of Proverbs is wisdom at its best! This book, in many ways, reveals to us the world as God created it - it provides the deep structure to the grace underlying all of creation. At the same time it shows us, from verse to verse, that the world is broken and needs a redeemer. We spent the Summer of 2010 in this study.

The Book of Habakkuk stands out among the prophets of Scripture. Most prophetic books provide little information regarding the prophet's personal experience, but Habakkuk is brimming with it. Habakkuk saw terrible things brewing from both his countrymen and his enemies and the man himself gets transformed from cynic to Psalmist within these three chapters. This short book packs a powerful punch. We studied it during the Summer of 2013.

The Book of Matthew preserves Jesus' teachings at its best. Christ came to earth to become the New Israel, fulfill Israel's Scriptures, and teach about the Kingdom of God that has now been manifested on earth -- and in this book we see Jesus himself connect that work to the Old Testament. It is appropriate that it comes first in our Bibles because it truly places Jesus' ministry in the context of the thousands of years (and pages) that preceded his appearing.

The Book of Luke pictures the world remade - and even turned upside down. This book contains God's plan for this world, his goals and his priorities. Those things see their fulfillment in the person and activity of Jesus Christ. The Book of Romans provides us with some of the most foundational teachings concerning the Christian faith. You cannot work your way through this monumental book without covering the essential topics of the Christian Life. What is the condition of mankind without redemption? How has God accomplished this redemption? What does that mean for those who have been redeemed? What about those who are not? It is all here!

Letter to the Romans-  An Introduction

The Book of Second Corinthians is often neglected but at its core it has one of the most encouraging explanations of the Christian faith that can be found in Scripture. It is that core we sought to unpack in this study (chapters four and five). The series was preached on the heals of our study of Job. We had been through the tornado of 2011 and been through Job; we entered this study feeling that it was time to drink deeply from the gospel.

Ephesians 1 is not only one of the longest sentences of the Bible, it is also one of the richest. In this study we sought to unpack some of its topics and apply them to our lives. We studied this great chapter in 2011.

The Book of Philippians can be deceptive. With so much joy talked about, one can think the book is about nothing other than joy. But the book, like joy itself, is rooted in something much deeper. Join us as we seek to understand the deep foundations from whence our joy comes. We studied this book in the Spring of 2010.

The Book of Colossians wrestles with the fact that Christ that stands over this world and that creates a war between our flesh and our Spirit. This life on earth is according to the flesh, but the source of the Christian's life is a life according to the Spirit. That creates a tension - a war. Because we are raised with Christ we live according to a different world order, one beyond the rules and regulations of this life. We studied this book in the Spring of 2008.

The Book of Titus helped us as we prepared our church for training and electing elders for the first time, in 2009. Since we believe that Scripture is sufficient for our life, faith and church, there is no better place than Scripture to guide our expectations of our elders.

Advent is observed the four Sundays leading up to Christmas. In our church, we want to take that time to meditate on Christ in a special way. Having four sermons dedicated to looking at Christ provides us a unique opportunity to slow down and look for Christ to surprise us, much as he did the world 2,000 years ago.
